South African-born, Neal Petersen is a world-class, history-making solo around-the-world racing yachtsman, global investor and award-winning author of Journey of a Hope Merchant, an autobiography.

Petersen has faced many challenges in life - childhood physical disability, economic hardship, prejudice during the harsh Apartheid era, and other insurmountable barriers and he always responded by turning them into opportunities — then solutions!

His experience shows that imagination coupled with determination to achieve, can break through the toughest challenges. Neal completed the 1998-99 "Around Alone", a 27,000 mile yacht race, nine months at sea, around Cape Horn alone — and in the smallest yacht, he designed and built himself.

In sharing his high-impact, unique and extraordinary life-story, documented for PBS, Neal delivers a powerful message that "There Are No Barriers — Only Solutions!"

Darlene’s career has spanned numerous sales position including spending 13 years as CEO of her international recruiting company Kristi Executive Search, dedicated to finding the best management talent globally for large manufacturing companies.

Not only did she source the best talent, she had to dig down to better understand what unique qualities and accomplishments they would bring to an organization, how they would sell their personal qualities in an interview and determine if their personality would fit the culture of the company.    

 

Katie Dreiling

Katie has over 10 years of experience in business development, fundraising, and marketing.  Earlier in her career, she served as the campaign finance director for a United States Senator and United States Governor — leading their fundraising efforts.

For the past six years, she has been with Colonial Life, a voluntary benefits company, serving in several capacities focused on the national broker market, and currently serves as the Assistant Vice President of National Broker Partners.

 

David Liberman

What I Wish I Had Known as a Pre-health Student

David Liberman fell in love with both travel and global outreach when he began working with Volunteers Around the World as an undergrad at the University of Southern California.

He wanted to expand the support of the organization to encompass dentistry as well as medicine for that is where his passion lies. He worked to open international dental clinics with VAW.  

David is currently a third year student at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and a recipient of the U.S. Army Health Professions Scholarship Program where he will serve as a Captain for the Army Dental Corps after graduation.

 

Tony Bartelme

Mission Possible: The World Desperately Needs More Doctors, Dentists and Nurses. Be Part of the Solution

Tony Bartelme, a three-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, is a special projects reporter for The Post and Courier in Charleston, South Carolina.

His investigative reporting has exposed government corruption and explored diverse issues ranging from changes in ocean plankton to the global shortage of doctors. His work has received the highest honors in journalism, including awards from the Gerald Loeb and Scripps foundations and Sigma Delta Chi.

He is the author or co-author of several books, including A Surgeon in the Village: An American Doctor Teaches Brain Surgery in Africa. Published this year by Beacon Press, The Washington Post calls it a “harrowing and important book,” and NBC broadcaster Tom Brokaw described it as “lyrical, inspirational and altogether rewarding.”

He was awarded a prestigious Harvard Nieman Fellowship in 2010 and is a graduate of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. He lives in Charleston with his partner, Annie, and has one son, Luke. In his off time, he enjoys doing marathons and triathlons.

 

Arush Lal

Arush Lal is the Global Policy and Advocacy Associate at IntraHealth International and a Fellow with the Global Health Corps. In this role, he focuses on improving the performance of frontline health workers and strengthening the health systems in which they work. This includes advocating to Congress and the Administration to improve government efforts to address gaps in access to health workers in low- and middle-income countries, engaging WHO and other multilateral institutions to build global consensus in training, supporting, and protecting health workers, and participating in coalitions and events to ensure health workforce and systems perspectives are incorporated into policies and programs worldwide.

Prior to this, Arush founded Volunteers Around the World - Georgia Tech, where he led 70 students to four developing countries, providing over 1,600 patients with critical medications and health education.
